Hi Den , Anton and friends

My company develops embedded Apps using Qt4.5.2. The coders here are mainly C++ cats , and they are doing a good job of it. I am more on the kernel and cross compiling side.

None of the guys have heard about fpc or lazarus. Myself, am the only guy using ppcrossarm for uclibc Arm9 SBCs. That too, on and off ,dur to my Delphi linage (Left it at Delphi4).

Some compelling reasons for your quest for qt for FreePascal despite the extra payload of libqt4intf.so ?
I am sure , there ought to be some, other than Lazarus IDE.

Would you be kind enough to share those? Something that C++ don't have that qt4pas can deliver?

Warm regards

Nataraj

There isn't anything C++ does which Delphi doesn't.....and the same the other way round.
Both languages are built with the same base in mind (eg; compatible data types...).
What you would gain is the ability to use a possibly familiar (and cleaner ;) ) language.

libqt4intf is the actual library containing the QT design code. It is "extra" in the sense that it isn't embedded inside the program. Whereas in C++, it is built directly in the executable. However, there are many ways to embed it in the executable as well.

Also, C++ may be more suited to development with QT, since it is what QT is geared to.
The QT IDE also generates QT code in C++, which is not available for FPC/Lazarus/Delphi.

Cheers,
Christian Sciberras.

Hi Christian

Would you advise an all out qt4-fpc development ATM? Alternatives are, the existing C++ resources and talents and Java , since my SBC supports jazzle technology.

Warm regards

Nataraj

I can't give any advice, however:

-Lazarus, can be made to use the QT widgets, which is impressive since there's a lot of GUI code going on in it.
-Many applications built with FPC/Lazarus use QT
-The company I work with will be using QT in a prototype (however, prerelease) project

I'm positive there are many alternatives out there, for instance, the GUI designer that comes with QT SDK is pretty impressive (and very useful with C++).

Cheers.

No, qt4-fpc development is not recommended. The library maps C++ object methods into flat C-style functions. It is not as nice to use as a real object library. It supports only a subset of QT. Its main purpose is to allow binding LCL graphical UI controls to QT.

You should look at QT's python bindings if you want to use a cleaner language than C++ and still use QT.
Or then forget QT and use Java instead.
Or, forget them both and use FPC + Lazarus / LCL.

Actually I was playing with the idea (in my mind only) of mapping the whole QT object library into a OP (Object Pascal) object library. It has to go through the flat function mapping and is clumsy but it should be possible. Then I was playing with the idea of replacing the current form designer with another plug-in designer suitable for QT layout, and then using Lazarus as a Pascal-QT design environment.
It would combine the best of 2 worlds:
A clean language (compared to C++) but still fast compiled binaries (compared to python bindings). Yes, and fast compilation during development.

I don't know how much sense it would make. FPC / Lazarus / LCL libraries also have a big amount of good quality code and they don't need any mapping.

Regards,
Juha
