Hi,

Seeing that they supported FPC/Lazarus too, I guess this might affect some people here.

----8<-------------8<-------------8<-------------8<-------------8<---- The business model change
Jan 29, 2013

DA-SOFT Technologies informs you, that starting from 28-January-2013 our company changes the business model. As a first step of this change we are stopping to market and sale our product - "AnyDAC for Delphi".

We are committed to provide technical support to the "AnyDAC for Delphi" customers with active "AnyDAC for Delphi" subscriptions.

At this moment we cannot provide you more information. Stay tuned and in close future we will provide additional information. Great news for all our customers are comming !

With best regards, Dmitry Arefiev DA-SOFT Technologies CEO ----8<-------------8<-------------8<-------------8<-------------8<---- Regards, - Graeme -

I wonder whether this "Great news" means they're developing something new or what...

Or maybe become a part of Delphi?

That's the suspicion on the Delphi newsgroups too, because DA-Soft worked hard on getting FireMonkey support working. And if that suspicion is true, then it would also spell the end of FPC/Lazarus support for AnyDAC - just like what happened with KSDev. :-(

It would also then beg the question: Does Embarcadero still write *any* software? Or do they just buy out smaller products and slap it into their Delphi product.

Does this fall under "worst fears confirmed"? At least from the POV of a FPC user...

The first release of FireDac comes with FPC package included how well this works or how long it will last I have no idea.

In their FAQ they only talk about Delphi XE3 and C++ builder... also they mention in "Does it work with other IDEs?" "No, it doesn't"...

find attached a screen shot with firedac installed on lazarus 1.1 this is just to make my point that the current release works with lazarus at the same time take a look at
http://blog.marcocantu.com/blog/firedac_announced.html and read on the comments for instructions on how to install it on DX2 along with the warning of no future support.

That being said I wouldn't spend a single minute more on firedac it has already chosen a path that I can not follow and I wouldn't recommend it to any one, for all intents and purposes I agree with you it is a waste of time.

Thank you for testing. It's likely that they didn't yet have the time to remove the support for Free Pascal/Lazarus and the older Delphi versions...

I have heard mixed comments about FireMonkey. I don't know what to think about it myself.
I seriously considered using it about half a year ago for a project but I didn't because FireMonkey 1 was so beta quality. However, that is not a fault of its architecture. It was just not ready yet. Are you saying its architecture is flawed, too?

I understand this is off-topic in a FPC list. It you want to answer elsewhere, fine. Lazarus list could be better because FireMonkey is a direct competitor of LCL (cross-platform and all).

Juha

I didn't say anything about the architecture (I didn't test FireMonkey, so it would be unfair I'd judge it). What I criticize is that Embarcadero buys technologies (the predecessor of FireMonkey, AnyDAC) and then only concentrates developing it for their current IDE. AFAIK the most current FireMonkey version in XE3 doesn't support FPC anymore. And it might be only a finite time until FireDac also doesn't support FPC (and older Delphi versions) anymore.

As I'm not talking about FireMonkey's architecture, but Embarcadero's style of business it would be off-topic on either list :)

Ok, it is about business and marketing decisions.
It is not interesting for me, I am more interested in technical merits.

Just so you know, by posting that image, you now painted a bulls-eye on your head. You are now violating the Embarcadero FireDAC EULA, which forbids FireDAC to be used with any other product than Delphi or C++ Builder. What a disgrace EMBT!

To recap how this all went down...
- AnyDAC was a great product that supported Windows and Linux, and Delphi and FPC.
- Embarcadero bought AnyDAC, then...
* Stripped functionality by removing Linux support, and no older Delphi versions than XE3.
* Restricted the license - Delphi XE3 and C++ Builder products only.
* Reduced the support from AnyDAC. You now have to pay extra for FireDAC support, which came as standard for the first year with AnyDAC.
* And for good measure, raised the price - a LOT.

Amazing. Embarcadero had no problems using FPC when they needed iOS support in Delphi XE2. No thanks was given. Didn't contribute a single line of code back to FPC. FPC is good enough when it suits them, but other than that FPC is evil.

Don't you just "love" corporate acquisitions, that often hurt consumers rather than help them.

All I can say is, thank goodness for open source software! Keep up the good work guys.

Oh did the message actually reached the list? I never receive it my self I though it was moderated out. In any case I'm aware of their license agreement and I have nothing to fear.
