README

IM_PDF: Inspector Mike PDF Manager

A lightweight Windows utility for viewing and editing the embedded file attachments within PDF documents.

This application was developed to simplify revision management of offshore inspection reports. It allows attachments to be copied between report revisions without requiring knowledge of command line tools or PDF internals.

Features

  • Open an existing PDF document.
  • View all embedded attachments.
  • Export attachments from a PDF.
  • Add new attachments.
  • Replace existing attachments.
  • Delete attachments.
  • Edit attachment descriptions.
  • Import all attachments from another PDF, with overwrite confirmation for duplicate filenames.
  • Save the updated attachment list back into the PDF.

The application maintains an in-memory model of the attachment collection, allowing multiple edits to be made before committing the changes to the PDF.

Typical Workflow

For revised reports:

  1. Open the new revision of the report.
  2. Import attachments from the previous revision.
  3. Replace or add any updated attachment files.
  4. Edit descriptions if required.
  5. Save the PDF.

This greatly reduces the effort required when producing successive report revisions.

External Dependencies

This application relies on several command-line tools which are shared by a number of applications within the IM.units library.

These tools are not included with this project and must be installed separately.
