HOF v2 - Hall of Fame utility for the Global War BBS door An update to the original HOF utility by Joel Bergen, fixing a Y2K date bug and adding an updated ANSI display.

HOF reads the Global War WINNERS.TOP file when a player reaches the top rank, adds their name and date to a running Hall of Fame list, and generates a colorful ANSI bulletin (BULLETIN.ANS) displaying the last 6 winners.

What's New in v2

  • Fixed Y2K bug that was not showing the winner's year correctly
  • Updated HOF.ANS with a much nicer looking ANSI display

The original HOF v1 files are preserved in the og-hof/ folder for reference.

Requirements

  • Global War door version 2.40 or later
  • A DOS-compatible BBS environment

Installation

  1. Back up your existing hof.exe and HOF.ANS in your Global War door directory
  2. Copy the new hof.exe and HOF.ANS into your Global War subdirectory (same location as WAR.EXE)
  3. Edit your HOF.DAT file to correct any existing winner years so past entries display properly
  4. Edit your WAR.BAT (or equivalent batch file) to call HOF after each game reset:
bat
cd \bbs\globlwar
war /r \bbs\dorinfo1.def
if exist winners.top hof
if exist winners.top del winners.top
cd \bbs

How It Works

When a Global War player reaches the configured top rank, the game saves WINNERS.WAR as WINNERS.TOP and resets the rankings. HOF detects this file and:

  1. Reads HOF.DAT to get the names of past Hall of Famers
  2. Drops the oldest entry to make room for the new winner
  3. Reads WINNERS.TOP to get the new winner's name and date
  4. Saves the updated list back to HOF.DAT
  5. Reads HOF.ANS as a template
  6. Inserts the 6 names and dates into the template
  7. Writes BULLETIN.ANS for display to callers

Customizing HOF.ANS

HOF.ANS is the display template. You can edit it with an ANSI editor such as TheDraw. Placeholder tokens in the template are replaced with real names and dates at runtime.
