ASCII:ssa merkkikoodi 39 (tai heksadesimaalisena 27) on määritelty ' ( heittomerkille ).

Pascal ohjelmointikielessä merkkijonot laitetaan heittomerkkien sisälle.

Jos halutaan tulostaa heittomerkin merkkijonoon niin se tuplataan.

Writeln ('ab''cd');   // merkkijono sisältää heittomerkin
