Hi all,

Our company has launched the new www.lazarussupport.com website. It's a new website about Free Pascal and Lazarus for new users. The goal is to try to get more attention for Lazarus and to help new users to start.

The site is still very basic, the goal is to extend it in the future. As you can see the layout of the site is based on the design from Bee. The complete website is running on the fpWeb framework.

Please take a look and tell what you think about it.

Congratulations, excellent work. Other than a few missing image links (Lazarus FAQ section) and some spelling mistakes (About page, "Free Pascal" is spelt as "freepascal"), it is very good and easy to navigate. :-)

Fixed the 'about' screen. The links in the Lazarus FAQ are because it's a simple copy of the real FAQ on the Lazarus Wiki. I have to make a better system for that.

I did not follow the previous discussion closely, but IMO this site should either (eventually) replace the current one, or cease to exist. Having two official sites is much worse than having one, even if not very pretty one.

A design nitpick: the toxic-blue rectangular buttons in the right-upper corner are hurtful to an eye.
They should, imho, be toned down (and maybe rounded). The same, to the lesser extent, goes to the Lazarus logo itself.

Agree. They don't seem to fit in with the theme.

I think it is the black frame around it and the fact that they don't have a gradient.

Congratulations, this looks good!

I've got a couple of text overflow problems (see screenshots attached). Sometimes my mouse cursor doesn't turn into a hand when I hover on a link, but stays a text input style. For example the "Linux" link in the "Get lazarus" page.

Sorry to say, but first impression is that it's really ugly. Too much empty space around the content.
Black border left and right but not at the bottom. Is there something wrong with my browser or is this (http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6147/lsonepiphany.png) the intended look?

I am quite sure that the content is fine but I don't like the A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.

That's what I get, too (firefox 3.5.9). I don't like the left and right borders, either. I'm also a bit perplexed as to why it isn't centred?

More notes:
1) When selecting a menu item from "COMPILER" section, the right panel displays the latest commit in Lazarus svn, but if you select an item from "IDE" section, it does not.

2) http://www.lazarussupport.com/lazarus/Compiler page is empty

3) http://www.lazarussupport.com/lazarus/Lazarus?section2=Download&IterationID=133 page contains broken link to "Lazarus" in navigation menu.

4) The "latest stable release" is different on the main page and in the bottom menu.

5) The GetLazarus/Download section is confusing.
It contains some similar, but not identical pages, cross-referencing each other, almost "a maze of twisty instructions, all alike". I think that at least "Get Lazarus" and "Download" pages should be unified, and the number of "hidden menus" inside them reduced (preferably to zero).

At least in Chrome and Firefox on Windows the column correctly stretches to the window bottom for me, so I think this is just a CSS bug.

Maybe, one day. But then it has to be extended quite a lot. One step at a time.
I want to extend this site and maybe it can replace the official site .(this site is not an official lazarus site, more a 'support' site ;) )

But this site is also partly commercial, so that could become a problem. And I don't agree that two sites is that bad. There are more OS projects that have this.

It wasn't my intention to send the design to a beauty contest. ;)

Too much empty space around the content.

On the contrary, IMHO including a prominent "Commercial support" section would be a good thing for both the current and the proposed sites. (Upon looking again, I realized that "Support" menu item is actually a commercial support, which is indeed misleading -- I think that page should either be renamed or supplemented with a list of "normal" support options, like forums and mail lists. BTW, you promise to support Lazarus 0.9.29 after the release, which is impossible, since it will become 0.9.30 then ;-)

Sure, and usually this is a sign of some problems in those projects.

I got a message from 1996: it wants its animated GIF logo back. :-) Please get rid of that, the site looks very amateur (and old) with it. One of these below (or even something new) would be better. http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/New_Lazarus_Icon_Proposals

In my opinion there should be only ONE website, maybe www.lazarus-ide.com or something like that, where we could find everything: basic information, downloads, documentation, wiki, forums, professional support, merchandise (mugs, t-shirts, etc). See www.ubuntu.com for a great example.

Nice, but it deserves more careful(l) proofreading.

AFAIR the official name is "Free Pascal" and "Florian Klaempfl", not sure about "usefull".

I also prefer "multi platform" over "cross platform", just to distinguish between Delphi "X" (which only is a *Windows based* cross-compiler) and the FPC/Lazarus tools, which run natively *on* a multitude of platforms.

I don't see this as a problem at all - looking at it from a commercial point of view. They are going to give commercial support, and it is their website (not the official Lazarus or FPC website). Anyways, they do have a forum link and a link to the wiki - which is the public "free" support.

And this I have to disagree with. :-) There are hundreds of Delphi websites, so why must FPC and Lazarus (which are two separate projects by the way) have a single website??? Yes FPC and Lazarus developers communicate a lot with each other, but that definitely doesn't make them one project - and thus one website.

I forgot to mention, I'm not a big fan of those logos either. They look rather "cheap" - if one can describe them as such. Also they sometimes make me think of "hello kitty", especially with the little heart shape in the middle of the first two icons (blue and orange versions). ;-)

I'm not suggesting we have a single website for FPC and Lazarus... I'm talking about Lazarus only. FPC has its www.freepascal.org and it's fine.

My suggestion:
- the top menu with Overview, Support, Project, Community, Partners and Shop;
- a flash slideshow like the one they have, showing screenshots (IDE, products, etc)
- a large "download" button very clear (like the one from Firefox website)
- the same "site map" from www.lazarussupport.com

The Overview page could be the same we have; in the Support page we could follow Ubuntu's example: "Access free documentation", "Buy professional support services", "Find training courses" (do they exist?) and "Get free community support". The "Shop" would help bring revenue to pay for hosting and bandwidth (at least).

Also, on page

abailable -> available

usefull -> useful all across the site please :)
(true, there are 2 LLs when you say usefully, but useful is with only one)

develpment -> development

"developers like to keep the control of the projects in the hands of the developers only"

assitence -> assistance

on working hours -> during working hours (2 places)

"Included is also the maintenance support." -> Maintenance support is also included.

I think someone else also mentioned 0.9.29 appearing on this page.

on page
http://www.lazarussupport.com/lazarus/GetLazarus
sometimes the links does not have the "Hand" mouse-over icon (I use Firefox), thought clicking on them works.

"And at the same time we want to help the development of these open source projects moving forward by providing patches and help where we can." -> At the same time we want to help the development of these open source projects to move forward by providing patches and help where we can.

on page

Unfortunately I ran out of time, so can not read more pages ATM. I will try to check some more...

* On the Overview page: last paragraph, Free Pascal is spelled incorrectly http://www.lazarussupport.com/lazarus/Overview

I vaguely remember "fastback plus". I did a quick Google search and found an article about it in a Info Work (google books) archive. On the same page there was an advert for a brand new 20Mhz Intel 386 system for a super price of just $3658.50 with 3MB additional RAM as optional (but you needed to call them for the price of that 3MB RAM)! So yes, it must be ancient! :-)

The Cheetah was show on the box cover of Fastback Plus. ;-)

Yes, of course, I'm aware of that. And as just about everyone who has commented so far has pointed out, it is the animation that bothers me.

And, to continue in the insanely pedantic tradition of threads here, it is more a mascot, not a logo.

Different hunting tactics. One is not necessarily better or worse.

But more importantly, it doesn't matter for a compiler, since the prey is typically not very long :-)

Just to clear things up a bit. Just because it "looks" similar doesn't mean it is a "variation of". A Cheetah and Leopard are very different. A Leopard and Jaguar are more related.

Leopards may sometimes be confused with two other large spotted cats, the cheetah and the jaguar. However, the patterns of spots in each are different: the cheetah has simple spots, evenly spread; the jaguar has small spots inside the polygonal rosettes; while the leopard normally has rounder, smaller rosettes than those of the jaguar. The leopard is larger and much more muscular than the cheetah, but slightly smaller and more lightly built than the jaguar.

Just to clear things up a bit. Just because it "looks" similar doesn't mean it is a "variation of". A Cheetah and Leopard are very different. A Leopard and Jaguar are more related. Leopards may sometimes be confused with two other large spotted cats, the cheetah ?and the jaguar.

Apple is very flattered by this discussion :)

It's interesting how fast threads are hijacked by the useless flame and discussions.

Correct. And that is why the suggestion to remove the animation is being made. IMO the presence of the animation detracts from the professional part of "professional support" and undermines the credibility of an important and significant site. Apparently others agree.

hummm... maybe it should be a flash animation, then? there are thousands of professional and corporate sites that (for some silly reason) seem to feel that flash animation is ok

presonally, i'd not do flash other than for video clips and even then there are other better suited means available and upcoming ;)

hummm... maybe there should be NO animation, then?

Point 1: Just because there are plenty of other people doing it does not make it OK. Witness your eye roll.

Point 2: It is not the technique used that matters. It is the distraction from the content of the site that matters. Any animation/playing of video/flash is the problem. It is purely gratuitous eye candy. Adds nothing of value. Attracts no one. Impresses no one. Bothers many.

IMHO, the biggest reason other sites have this stuff is they let their graphic artists take orders from their marketing types and both have too much time on their hands. There is a serious lack of proper judgment to be had in business today (world-wide) so please let's not just do what others are doing or accept doing it because they do it.

Let's try this another way: This new site has just copied the FPC/Laz site. I've asked that they remove this part because it bothers me. Others have agreed. No one has yet to voice a different opinion. This subject has come up before and had similar results bu no changes have been made. I brought it up again because I don't think copying this part of the existing sites is a good idea, especially for a business/professional site.

Other than the fact the the FPC/Laz community is used to it, and therefore do not see any reason to remove it, why is it there? What purpose does it serve on this new site? I'll be the designer just saw it on the old site and copied it. I'd like to prod them to have a better reason than that for using it.

Alright. Even though I might have a little quibble with the mascot of FPC being a cheetah, I am not at all sure I can stand and watch the cheetahs being insulted this way in their absence.

Sopts of cheetahs are anything but simple; they are miracles of time-tested sophistication of millions of years of evolution revealed only to the discerning eye of the beholder. ;)

Hi, I want to congratulate the developer(s) of the IDE docking package, It improved a lot since the last time I tried it.

A cool addition could be allowing to dock the main window (the one with the main menu), this is because when the editor window is maximized, it overlaps the main window.

P.S.: I don't know if the package I'm talking about is EasyDockMgr or AnchorDocking, could you clarify this to me?.

Precisely (although technically they're not so much copying it as being a link farm). This site is not adding value. Look, I don't care that this site is trying to capitalize on what is a free and open source product; lots of successful support companies do this with MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc. What I do ask is that if you are going to be asking for money you show a little bit of original content. Yes.
But the docking packages are still not stable yet.

The anchordocking allows this.
I thought the easydockmgr too.

Currently the main window plays a special role, but it could be made a docksite with some efforts. The same with some other windows, that currently are treated specially by the IDE.

IOW the IDE is not yet fully dock-aware or, to be more precise, it does many things that cannot be changed by other (docking...) layout managers. We're working on that...

P.S.: I don't know if the package I'm talking about is EasyDockMgr or AnchorDocking, could you clarify this to me?.

The dockable IDE currently is based on the EasyDockMgr. But I've seen another MiniIDE example for AnchorDocking...

John, I was referring to the animated GIF of the cheetah only. You have generalized a specific thread branch which was focused on the animation only. If you want to comment on the new site overall, please reply to another message. Perhaps the original announcement?

This is sad, very sad.

Months ago there was a thread "Reconstructing Lazarus Website". The idea was that the current website front page is a forum, that newcomers don't know what is or where to begin from, information is disordered etc..

After a thread of 100,000 messages, discussions up and down, about contents, about appearance, about the sex of the cheeta and about the existence of God, the new website is still waiting nowhere. I suppose that the starter (Bee Jay?) got sick of working and getting complains, nitpiking and no help.

If he gets money, well done, he has earned it because he has done something important: Something. That is what none of us has done. In four months, none of us has move a finger to improve Lazarus website.

Joost has put his hands into the dirt to do the job and we complain. If that is not positive reinforcement, I don't know what is.

The anchordocking design package makes the main bar a docksite. The design package for easydockmgr adds an elastic sites to the bottom. I don't know why that does not work.

The designer package for anchordocking is called anchordockingdsgn.lpk.

I have both packages installed, and, in fact I can dock the editor to the main window. The problem is the main window just allows to resize its height to approx. 100pixels. Imagine trying to edit in a 100pix height window :)

Only one dock manager can be active at a time. Install only one. The anchordocking clears the constraints. I guess you are using the easydockmgr.

The last installed wins ;-)

Installable managers should destroy eventually existing instances of other managers. This also will solve the problem with a pre-fabricated default TIDELayout.

The anchordocking clears the constraints. I guess you are using the easydockmgr.

The constraints should be set only by the default layout manager. As soon as another layout manager is used, no constraints should apply to forms.

No, the anchordocking checks if there is already one installed and does not touch it.
The easydockmgr does not check and replaces whatever is there. The easydockmgr always wins ;)

The docking manager handles Bounds, Align, Anchors, BorderSpacing and AutoSize. I don't see why it should not also handle Constraints. At the moment the anchordocking does not yet restore the constraints on undock. This is a todo.

Constraints are not applicable do docksites in a dockable layout. When the MainBar shall become a docksite, it should have all predefined components in a panel or other container, which can have a fixed/constrained size.

I don't understand what requirements you mean. The arrangment and extent of all the forms should be up to the user, so that docksites and dockable forms should not impose limits that prevent the user from constructing his intended layout.

The EasyDockMaster saved layout includes only actually docked forms, the other forms have to be managed by the application. In the IDE case we can agree about a common handling for *all* currently open forms, in the IDEDockMaster or IDELayout. Then the IDELayout/DockMaster manager can store information about *all* currently open forms in the layout file, and on a layout restore it can delegate their handling to either the application (IDE) or to the EasyDockMaster. For this handling we'll have to define the hooks in the IDE, for the restoration of the not-docked forms. Currently it's unclear to me, how the FormCreators and SimpleLayout etc. classes/objects have to be used.

BTW, I just noticed that on Linux (KDE) the "Show single button in TaskBar" option has the strange effect, that on a Minimze of the MainBar *only* the MainBar is minimized, all other windows stay visible.

For example that constrains are not "applicable".

Yes, that is a limitation of your window manager. It does not allow to hide windows without a task bar button. This protects you from loosing windows. In fact the Lazarus IDE menu 'Window' is a workaround for those window managers that does not have this protection (MS Windows).

Constraints are not applicable in a tree-style docksite. The DockManager arranges the docked clients, by tiling the client area, and allows the user to fine-tune the layout. A docked client must stay visible, because the DockManager interface lacks an according notification.

Thanks, but your implementation IMO works in the wrong sequence. The IDE should ask the layout manager to show a form, and the layout manager calls an IDEWindowCreator to create not yet existing forms, and then can apply its current layout, or it can delegate the placement of unmanaged forms again to the WindowCreator. The default layout manager will do what the IDE currently does when no layout manager (IDEDockMaster) is installed.

Several months ago I presented an patch, that minimizes only the main form to the taskbar, and hides all other windows. When the main form is restored, all other windows are made visible again. This procedure should work for all window managers.

It's not really a content Management System. It's all custom made. It ahs an edit-button, that's enough. In some places there's a button to add or delete items.
