Hi,

So what is still needed for full UTF-8 support in Lazarus (IDE and widgetsets). Is there something I need to enable when I compile it, or is it still missing features?

For example, I tried to open the Contributor.utf8 file in a Memo.

* Using GTK2 it displays correctly
* Using GTK1 and it doesn't display correctly.
* Using Win32, I have no idea, but would guess that it now display correctly.
* Qt, I have no idea
* fpGUI displays it correctly ;-)

Is any development still being done for GTK1, or will that widgetset be phased out before the v1 release?

Regards,
- Graeme -

I would say that the biggest thing missing is dropping gtk1, but it will still take a lot of time for that to happen. All other interfaces now support unicode, including win32, wince, qt, etc

I think there is 1 bug report for win32 unicode.

* Using GTK1 and it doesn't display correctly.

It's not our fault:

http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Lazarus_known_issues_%28things_that_will_never_be_fixed%29#Inconsistent_internationalization_support

* fpGUI displays it correctly ;-)

By the way, is there any development in the fpgui interface?

Is the roadmap for it updated?

Gtk 1 is still officially the official linux interface for 1.0. If you go to the bug tracker and set "gtk2" in the tags, there are some 50 bugs.

There are complaints that gtk2 is too slow, specially in distributed systems.

Maybe a good fpgui widgetset could alliviate some of the problems, and be used together with gtk2 to substitute gtk1.

Did you choose a double byte font?

For example:
-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1

* Using Win32, I have no idea, but would guess that it now display correctly.

:)

This depends on the progress of the other widgetsets.

I simply renamed the Contributor.utf8 to contributors.txt and viewed it in the IDE (About screen).
I would guess is used the 'default' font, what ever that ends up being.

GTK 1.2 was never designed to work with non ANSI and non latin texts. You can display chars using a UTF-8 charset, but that's it.

You should try imho, to use GTK2 or QT4 for that.

Ido

All my applications I create use fpGUI directly. UTF-8 is fully supported in fpGUI, so that's not a problem. I simply test the various (GTK and GTK2) LCL widget sets every now and again. 99.9% of the time I use the Lazarus IDE compiled with GTK1, simply because it's more stable for me, and the editor has no flicker.

One day LCL-fpGUI widgetset will be complete, then this whole point should be moot. ;-)

Does fpGUI finally supports Bidi (in Text and in widgets) ?

I can finally write hebrew text using fpGUI Edit for example ?

Ido

Nope, only Left-to-Right languages are currently supported. The same goes for mixed LTR and RTL in the same text with selection. You're welcome to implement Bidi support though. ;-)

On widgets, i'm willing, for text such as selections writing etc, only with help of at least 4 more people that knows how things works. It is a very complicated algorithm.
It took FreeBidi few years to fully implement it without any bugs, and so does IBM in ICU, Pango and QT4. And they all had more developers then one ...

I know! :) I did some reading on the subject a few months back. It looked very complicated, and seeing that I don't have a need for it, it's very low on my to-do list.
