You just missed a few posts concerning beginning with FPC on the Mac. :) Check out the most recent archives for information on Carbon, Cocoa, macpas mode, OOP, and MacOSAll and other compiler directives.

To program FPC on the Mac you have to

1) Install Apple's X-code developer package.

2) Download and install FPC for the mac OS ( brand new version FPC v 2.2.4 just released!)

if you are using an intel mac

Free Pascal - Download Mac OS X
http://www.freepascal.org/down/i386/macosx-ftp.freepascal.org.var

or if you are using a powerpc mac

Free Pascal - Download Mac OS X
http://www.freepascal.org/down/powerpc/macosx-ftp.freepascal.org.var

3) And do one or more of the following:

a) Install and learn and use the Xcode Integration Toolkit which comes with the above downloads

b) Download and use Ingemar's LW IDE for the Mac

Lightweight IDE

c) Download and use Josef's Pascal Gladiator for the Mac

http://blog.web-scripter.com/pascalgladiator/

d) Download, install, learn and use Lazarus for the Mac

I personally recommend LW IDE, especially if you are just starting out as it is the simplest to use. If you find you need more capabilities, check out the other options.

I don't think the FPC IDE is available for the Mac? Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I suggest at least skimming over the FPC language reference guide and other documents so you have an idea of the FPC dialect versus what you may or may not know from previous macintosh (or other platform) pascal implementations.

Free Pascal - Online documentation

Also, here is a link to a couple fpc wiki Macintosh pages. Note, they talk about compatibility with older mac pascal dialects. You won't have to worry about this if you are brand new to mac programming and don't have any old mac pascal code you want to port.

Free Pascal - Free Pascal on the Macintosh
Mode MacPas - Free Pascal wiki

if you want to do any Carbon programming you will need to use the unit MacOSAll in your programs.

if you want to use Cocoa in your programs, there is some support in Lazarus and also work currently being done to provide a programming interface like there is for Carbon. - ROW

Hi,

You can install fpc using fink (command: fink install fpc). The stable tree of fink has fpc 2.2.2; 2.2.4 is in the unstable tree. I intend to move the 2.2.4 version to the stable tree in a timeframe of a few (2-4) weeks.

"fink install fpc" also installs the FPC IDE.
You can start it in the terminal with the command "fp".

The advantage of using fink is the clean uninstall with the purge command of fink as well as crosscompilers for IntelMacs.

The FPC IDE has not been worked on lately, as you may notice. In order to access the menus you have to press ESC and the short cut letter, for example "F". Other IDEs are definitely nicer and easier to use. I would say, using it is either for the die-hard FPC IDE user or as a last resort for use through a terminal connection.

I for one have no desire to use lazarius ide, but I would like to use some of the libraries that come with it.
I however, have been completely unsuccessful in getting the lazarius environment to build properly on osx. It is supposed to work, but all I get is errors about missing units, same with trying to use pascocoa, missing units, and no compile.
I'm not new to building from scratch, but the instructions say one thing about how to do things, and the actuality is completely different. It's not important enough to me to waste the time it would take to iron out these issues, since the base fpc install works just fine for my needs. Having pascocoa working would be a nice plus, but its by no means necessary, as I can use java for my gui building if necessary, then using the xtools, tie that java code back to C or pascal code to do the work behind the gui.
However, if someone else manages to take the time to solve these problems, I'd certainly test/use such an environment, but at the moment, it's not important enough to me personally to bother with it. (especially since when I ask questions about it on list, I get answers that don't even pretend to address the issues of which I have asked) To me, that just cries no contest. And, if the actual fpc folks dont care enough to give valid answers, then I dont care enough to make it work.

Maybe, you can get somewhat further by using fink. the package lazarus- common installs the gtk, aqua and gtk2 version of the lazarus component library (lcl). The easiest use is through lazarus, either in the native aqua look (package lazarus-aqua) or the gtk look (package lazarus-gtk). I have recently also added also a gtk2 version, but this is still fairly "rough" and depends on a large number of other libraries. It should also be possible to use the lazarus component library, but i did not try that.

Until now, installing lazarus with fink also needs fpc installed through fink. Unfortunately, this means that there might be "interference" if you keep the freepascal installed through the .dmg package. The solution would be to rename /usr/local or take it off the PATH variable of your shell. One advantage of fink is that you can easily achieve a clean removal of installed packages with the fink command "purge".

Maybe, it would be a good idea to join the irc channel lazarus-ide on irc.freenode.net. There are a good number of good willing people who would probably guide you through your problems.

What units are missing? Lazarus compiles fine on my Mac. What instructions did you follow?
