What do you want to hear?

Many thanks for responding to my request.

Way back in my Win98 days, I made good use of Borland TP7. When I changed to Debian GNU/Linux, I got rid of all my proprietry software,
and FPC took the place of BP7. It is excellent, and I enjoy using it.

However, as a result of the above events, I never learned Delphi, although I often
use Object Oriented concepts.
Kylix never took off, and so I am pinning my hope on Lazarus.

The only Lazarus downloads I see are for Windows, whatever that is.

Please can you recommend the best way to start using Lazarus ?

Best regards,

Geoff.

Not really. There are pre-compiled packages for Linux and Mac OS X also.

The download page is this one:

Unfortunately there aren´t yet Debian packages, but only RPM Linux packages.

The good thing is that you can convert the rpm packages to debian ones =) and then install them.

Install instructions for Debian are here:
http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/Installing_Lazarus#Installing_Lazarus_under_Debian_GNU.2FLinux

I think it´s probably best to use the "Another way to install Lazarus under Debian".

About learning Delphi / Lazarus, a good source of knowledge is the Lazarus Wiki: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/Lazarus_Documentation

There are also some websites to help you:
http://www.delphibasics.co.uk/Article.asp?Name=Standard

Most things that work under Delphi will work on Lazarus with little or no change.

thanks,
