I've finally managed to properly compile the latest CVS (as of an hour or two ago). Turns out the problems i was having with those permission denied errors were windows being stupid (right-click -> properties not showing files are "read only" when they actually were).

Just like to take this time to thank the ppl in #fpc / FreeNode who have been so patient with this n00b about things, it really is appreciated ...
