Hallo,

I want to run a Library "Stifte & Mäuse" developed for Borland Pascal 7. It originally uses egavga.obj, litt.obj ...

I have already managed to change the sources, that it runs under Linux (kernel 2.4; SuSE 7.1; no major changes) .

But: I need to be root, to start compiled files, thus I get the message svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.

The library ist designed for teaching basics of OOP. I think, it is no good idea, granting the pupils to act as root. Even sudo seems to be dangerous

Any idea?

Friedrich

try to use svgalib 1.9.7, it doesn't need root privileges now.. If I recall correctly the only need is to grant access to /dev/svga

See ya

Don't you know about the setuid-bit?

Do the following as root:
chown root <prog>
chmod u+s <prog>
(Put in the name of the program instead of "<prog>") The program can then be run by any user.

The library ist designed for teaching basics of OOP.

Where can I get it?

Hi people :-),

I tried some simple stuff in the unit graph and realized that it always invokes the xserver running (or not running) on the Linux server.
My goal would be to use routines that are *remote* XServer capable.

How do I go about this and what units should I look into!

thanks,
Stefan Becker

The graph unit doesn't use X at all, as it uses only svgalib functions, which switches the graphics adapter directly to the right graphics mode.

My goal would be to use routines that are *remote* XServer capable.

A solution could be GGI plus its own version of svgalib: A svgalib replacement, which redirects all commands to GGI itself. Perhaps it's possible to use remote X servers with that.

I don't see other possiblities in conjunction with the old graph unit; normally you have to use the xlib for accessing local or remote X servers. Libraries such as GDK/GTK are built on top of xlib, or you might even use the fpGFX library for Free Pascal, which is still quite beta: http://www.freepascal.org/fpgfx/
But all of these libraries force you to work event based.
